Close entry 06/07/17 - How to Stand Out with your Exterior Door Colour

We are told not to judge a book by its cover. We are also told that first impressions last. The entrance to your house is the first impression that people get about your home and since your home is not a book, the impression needs to be a good one. If you are looking to give your home some kerb appeal, your front door could be the key; more specifically, the colour of your front door.

Painting Your Exterior Door

If your exterior door is looking a little worse for wear, it may be time for a makeover. Solid wooden doors are often worth restoring rather than painting. You may want to consider a simple sand-and-varnish to bring your front door back to its former glory.

For painted doors, the process is a little more complicated. The paint can be prone to chipping and cracking over time, creating a very unattractive look. If you are done with touch-ups and want a fresh look, painting your exterior door is the answer. It is important to buy a high-wear exterior paint for this. Also make sure you set aside enough time to finish the job in one go. A sunny and warm weekend would work best. You will need to remove as much old paint as possible before applying a primer and then your chosen colour.

Choosing a Colour for your Exterior Door

Colour can say a lot about you and we often have a craving for bold colours in our lives. Painting an interior wall or an interior door in a very bold colour will almost certainly ruin the ambiance you have created in your home. Your exterior door, however, is a wonderful place to experiment with a pop of colour. To choose the right colour for your exterior door, it is advisable to get a few paint chips and tape them to your front door for a while. This way you can avoid any regrets and pick the right colour the first time around.

For the most impact, choose a bold colour that compliments the current colours of the house. For instance, a brick façade could be lifted using a bright yellow or a bold red for the exterior door.

Completing the Look

A great tip for really standing out with your exterior door colour is to add a second punch of the same colour with a small accessory near the front door. For instance, if you have painted your door a bold red, a small outdoor table in the same red, paired with a white chair would complete the look.
